Rush City played Two Harbors in the section semi finals on Wednesday night.
The Tigers made the trip up north to Hermantown High School Wednesday night, a trip that the team and fans have gotten used to over the last few seasons.
Rush City was able to win the 1st set, after finding a rhythm late and forcing the Agates into mistakes.
The 2nd set was challenge for both sides, the set was even early on but the Tigers were making uncharacteristic mistakes. While the Agates had capitalized off of some of those mistakes, they struggled to pull away. Both teams faced their own challenges, but Rush City was struggling to find accuracy on some of their big hits. The Tigers, a team well known for big hits, were sending most of their power hits just long of the boundary. This happened once or twice in the 1st set, but was all of a sudden becoming an issue in set 2. Two Harbors deserves credit however, they were building on their lead and making the Tigers uncomfortable. The Agates were able to hold onto the lead for much of the 2nd set and won 25-22.
Now that the match was tied, both teams had seemingly settled in and shook off any playoff jitters. You could really tell they had gotten comfortable in the 3rd set. Both teams came out swinging, literally. There were big hits, aces, key blocks and hustle plays being made left and right. Neither team had any advantage over the other at this point. The biggest lead for either side was only a couple points, and that quickly diminished with a short run for the other side. This back and forth continued deep into the set, but in Rush City fashion, they were able to make the key plays and pull away late to win the set 25-21.
It seemed like everyone was on the edge of their seat for the 4th set, expecting another photo finish. The expectation of a close set was washed away early in the set. The Tigers dominated, jumping out to a 17-2 lead. It looked to be all but over, but the Agates fought their way back as best they could. It was too little too late and the Tigers pounced on their opportunity to close out the set. Rush City ran away with the set victory 25-8, winning the match 3-1.
With the win the Tigers will be back to Hermantown on Saturday for the section championship.
They'll play against Esko at 4pm, WCMP will be their with coverage!
