The Pine City Council voted Thursday to extend the city’s current contracted mutual fire aid agreement with Rush City through April 1.
Rush City has reduced its rates to fall in line with Pine City’s, which are based on the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
According to city administrator Marcy Peterson, Rush City has requested to meet in February to discuss a contract through the end of 2025.
Peterson said Rush City has requested three free mutual aid calls for each city as part of the new contract.
The council voted unanimously to extend the current contract. Council members Gina Pettie and Kyle Palmer were not present at Thursday's meeting.
How the contracted mutual aid agreement started
In December of 2023, Rock Creek opted to contract with the Rush City Fire Department instead of renewing with Pine City.
The Pine City Council subsequently voted to cancel mutual aid services with Rush City., effective at the end of February 2024.
Rush City Administrator Amy Jo Mell reached out to Pine City administration in March of 2024, seeking to reinstate free mutual aid between the departments, a proposal which was rejected by the Pine City Council in early April.
The Pine City Council approved a contracted aid agreement and fee schedule with Rush City in June of last year.
