The Pine City girls basketball team hosted St. Croix Prep on Friday.
The Dragons were looking for a quick turnaround after a tough loss the night before to Proctor.
Defense was the story early on in this game, both teams played with tiring pace, which lead to each team grabbing their fair share of turnovers. But they were also playing physical and every shot was contended. Just under the halfway mark in the 1st, the Lions held a 13-9 lead over PC. But the Dragons kept with their gameplan offensively and it started to pay off, they turned things around to go on an 8-0 scoring run to take the lead. Rebounding was a big factor for Pine City in getting their offense jump started, they were crashing the glass and allowed very few second chance scoring opportunities. Just before they held a 6 point lead over the Lions. St Croix Prep started to heat up and cut the lead down to one, luckily halftime had come and Pine City was able to get a break.
The 2nd half began and the offenses had taken over, it seemed like we were in for a shootout, a stark contrast from the 1st half. The teams kept the game close, trading the lead a few times. Halfway through the 2nd half, the Dragons started to take over and slowly pull away. Even they they only once held a lead of double digits, momentum had fully swung and the Dragons did not surrender it back. Pine City would close out the game with the win 51-44.
Pine City picks up their second win on the season, and they continue to grow as one and the players are starting to feel it all come together. They'll play at St. Francis on Monday.
