East Central girls hosted McGregor on Tuesday night.
On a day where most if not all the local area schools were closed due to the artic blast we had, these two teams had a heated battle.
Once the game began McGregor scored first and held an advantage over the Eagles. But East Central wasted no time getting on the board and the game stayed close. Despite turning the ball over a plethora of time via the travel, the Mercs would not surrender the lead. The Eagles just couldn't seem to capitalize on the opponents empty possessions. But turnovers were a big key to this game. Both teams had their fair share in the 1st half and it certainly frustrated both sides. Despite this the Eagles trailed the entire 1st half, but never by more than 6. And just when it seemed like the Mercs were about to pull away a key timeout for East Central was the turning point. Their offense caught fire and cut the deficit to two, and the defense was locked in. Still they trailed going into halftime 26-24.
East Central used that momentum from the end of the 1st half, to get the 2nd half off to a 10-0 run and give them their first lead of the game. They dominated the boards and it felt like every shot they took was going in. McGregor would answer back though but they were not able to take the lead away. The game eventually slowed down once again because of turnovers. It seemed to plague both teams but Eagle turnover gave life back to McGregor. East Central lead for a majority of the 2nd half, but with under 4 minutes to go the Mercs began to capitalize off the turnovers and retook the lead. The Eagles fought back and gave themselves a chance late. Unfortunately, the Mercs would hold onto this lead for the win 58-53.
This loss for the Eagles stings, but the mistakes they made are very fixable and they were certainly the better team that night. They'll play their final regular season game at home on Friday against MLWR.
