Dragons Fall on Opening Night but Show a Ton of Promise

The Pine City football team hosted Grand Rapids on Thursday night.

In a game that was preceded by wind, rain, and lightning that pushed the start time back nearly 2 hours. Once the game kicked off, both teams needed a drive or two to knock off the cobwebs. But after they did, they each settled in. Grand Rapids scored first after Dragon turnover set them up deep in Pine City territory. Each team popped their fair share of chunk plays but could not find the endzone. One of the biggest reasons why each team struggled was penalties. There were 14 of them in the first half, 2 were declined and 2 were offsetting. None the less they played a major factor in keeping each side from getting in striking distance of scoring. Late in the first half, Pine City was looking to make a final push before the end of the half. The longest play of the game came on a Austin Wiener pass to Evan Doenz for 50 yards to set them up in Grand Rapids territory with alot of momentum. Unfortunately, they were unable to convert the big play into points and gave the ball back to Grand Rapids. But the Dragons held the Thunderhawks from scoring and went into half trailing only 8-0.

Grand Rapids was able to use a long drive and score the only touchdown in the third quarter to extend their lead 14-0. Once again each team had their fair share of chunk plays. For Pine City they were hoping to hold onto the momentum gained from those plays. Sadly, they shot themselves in the foot with penalties and lost said momentum. Rapids would use their physical run game to wear out the Pine City defense. The Thunderhawks scored twice more in the 4th, leading 28-0. The Dragons weren't able to get into the endzone before the final seconds drained off the clock, falling to 0-1.

Despite the loss Pine City has a plethora of positives going forward with this team. They'll be in Pequot Lakes next Friday.
