Dragon Boys Fall on Friday, Girls Victorious in Regular Season Finale

Pine City's boys basketball team played on Friday at Hinckley-Finlayson while the girls played Saturday at home wrapping up their regular season.

The Dragon boys team played a big game against the Jaguars on Friday.

It was a bit of a slow start for both teams to begin the 1st half. Turnovers played a big factor in the sluggish start. But the basket seemed to have shrunk for both sides as well. Pine City did have the lead and held onto that lead till late in the first half. With under 4 minutes left in the half, the Jags began to swing momentum in their favor. They took the lead from Pine City and built up a 27-22 lead at half.

The Jaguars started where they left off in the 2nd half. They even pulled out to a double digit lead. Their defense played a huge part in keeping their lead. They made sure to not allow any Dragons open shots from outside. And when they drove inside, there was no room to breathe. Rebounds for Hinckley-Finlayson kept Pine City from getting any 2nd chances. As the half wore along the Dragons finally broke through and found some rhythm on offense. They were as close as one before the Jags pushed it back to 3. With under 5 seconds left Pine City trailed by 2. They were able to get the ball back and call a timeout. About 4 timeouts were called between both teams before the Dragons had their final chance to win or tie. The shot was missed and the Jags came out on top 65-63.

Pine City falls to 13-12 on the season and finish 9-3 in conference play. They'll host Esko in their regular season finale on Tuesday.

Hinckley-Finlayson improves to 12-13 on the year and finish 7-5 in the conference. They'll finish the season on the road in Upsala on Thursday.

It was senior night for the Dragons, and they honored their four seniors: Ella Sell, Isabelle Jarveis, Kloey Lind and Sophie Lahti.

The Pine City girls much like they have all season jumped out to an early lead over Milaca. But the Wolves were answering almost every score Pine City made. It was a back and forth game throughout the 1st half. As halftime approached, the Dragons were able to create a plethora of turnovers and managed to grab a 39-28 lead at the half.

The Dragons started the 2nd half on a 6-0 run. Milaca was quick to make changes and turn things in their favor. The Wolves erased a double digit lead and sat within a couple points of taking over the lead. Both teams had their fair share of ups and downs. Madison Gothmann was a big upside for Milaca she took the game over and nearly hit every shot she took which electrified her teammates and kept her team in the game. For Pine City it was the rebounds that was their upside. They eliminated any chance for the Wolves to get 2nd chance opportunities and also helped their team grab some put backs. The Dragons never surrendered the lead and held on to a 67-59 lead.

Pine City finishes the season 20-6 and 5-2 in section play. They'll host Rush City on Thursday for the first round of the playoffs.

Milaca finished the season 14-12 and 6-8 in section play. They'll be the #8 seed and host Spectrum on Thursday.
