Correctional officer at Rush City prison charged with introducing contraband

An investigation conducted by the Minnesota Department of Corrections into inappropriate conduct by a correctional officer at the Rush City prison resulted in charges against a Mora woman.

Kristi Tyler has been charged with introducing contraband to a state prison, which is a felony-level offense, and a misdemeanor charge of unauthorized communication with prisoners.

According to the criminal complaint, the investigation began in September of 2024.

An incarcerated individual was heard coordinating a drop-off of a phone and other substances on a monitored phone call.

Tyler's personal phone number was requested by an inmate, and investigators determined she was contacted on Sept. 26.

In a later call, Tyler confirmed to an inmate that she "received the item," and that she intended to bring them into the facility the following day.

On Sept. 27, Tyler admitted to bringing a cell phone and bags of a white powdery substance into the Rush City correctional facility.

The phone was located in her jacket pocket, and the suspected narcotics were located in Tyler's backpack.

The contents tested positive for cocaine, and weighed eight grams.

Tyler will make her first appearance in Chisago County court on April 23.
