A Chisago County man was sentenced to over 33 years in prison after the 2023 shooting death of his wife.
On Wednesday, 41-year-old Harris resident Mike Carda was sentenced to 284 months in prison for second-degree murder, and 131 months for second-degree attempted murder.
Carda entered an Alford plea for both charges last October. A second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon charge was dismissed.
According to the criminal complaint, deputies were called to a Fish Lake Township property on the report of a domestic incident on October 6, 2023.
The complaint said the deputy knocked on the door and announced himself. In response, he heard a female voice saying “he has a gun.”
The deputy then heard gunshots coming from what he thought was the bedroom. Three rounds were also reportedly fired through the window near where the deputy was standing.
After a standoff with the Chisago County SWAT team, Carda was arrested.
Law enforcement discovered a deceased female in the home, identified as his wife, Sarah Carda.
Mike Carda had a pending domestic assault case, and was under a domestic abuse no-contact order.
