Chengwatana State Forest fully reopens; wildfire fully contained

The Chengwatana State Forest has fully reopened to the public on Friday morning after the Evergreen Forest fire reached 100 percent containment.

According to an update from Minnesota DNR public information officer Leanne Langeberg, beneficial rain and snow fell on the burn area on Oct. 31, helping the firefighter suppression effort.

The wildfire began on Oct. 17, a day in which most of east-central Minnesota was under a red flag warning. The fire reached 167 acres.

Langeberg said an incident management team was brought in due to ongoing dry conditions and challenges accessing the fire due to its remote location.

The team handed the fire coordination back to the DNR late Friday when the blaze reached 90 percent containment.

Due to the fire suppression activities, Langeberg said access roads may be in rough condition. The Minnesota DNR will be working to improve road conditions over the next couple of weeks.

Langeberg said the cause remains under investigation, and will likely take some time to determine.
