Cambridge-Isanti Wins Double Header Battle over Chisago Lakes

wcmpsports5

It was the 2nd and final meeting of the season between these two teams on Tuesday night.

In the 1st game of the double header it was the girls who would play.

It was a slow start to the game for both teams, neither team could establish any rhythm on offense but the defenses were stepping up. Whether it was blocked shots, steals, playing physical or forcing awkward shots we had it all from a defensive standpoint. Both teams were able to score periodically but simply couldn't beat the defense. It was a close game throughout the 1st half, neither team was able to take more than a 4 point lead before the other came back and either tied or took a lead themselves. It wasn't until nearly the very end of the half that one team began to gain some momentum, and it came from a not so obvious spot. One of the Bluejackets younger players ended the half with 7 straight points which equated to their run at the end of the 1st, that was Allie Troolin. With the run her team went into halftime leading 18-10.

With the momentum from the 1st half on their side Cambridge-Isanti came out in the 2nd half building off of that. They were quickly able to build up a double digit lead and their defense seemingly had a stronghold on the game. This was helped by Troolin but also Ellie Davis who was unstoppable in the paint. Chisago was certainly rattled but that didn't stop them. They continued to play hard all through the rest of the game, their passion for the game showed. Although they are a young team without any seniors, they are in good hands for the future. The Bluejackets came out on top 53-26.

C-I improves to 8-14 on the season and will play in Becker on Thursday night. They still have a chance to win some game and try and get a home playoff game.

Chisago is now 2-22 on the season but continue to show up for each other. They will not play the rest of this week but will be back in action next Tuesday at St. Francis.

Then it was the boys turn. Unlike the girls game scoring was not at a premium in this game. No the scoring got started early and it was often. Both teams matched each other early on, when one team would score the other moved just as quick to get into position to get a basket. But then then after a couple timeouts by each team the scoring some what stalled out and the defenses became the focus. It was still a close game at this point but watching the teams move so quickly and set up with good plays and not score certainly had to be frustrating for each coach. As the defenses settled in and made their fair share of plays, we were in for yet another scoring onslaught in the last 6 minutes of the 1st half. Most of the scoring came from C-I as they ripped of 14 in a row to take a 40-20 lead. The Wildcats not to be outdone had came back strong and dipped the lead back under 20 points. But with 5 seconds left Chisago tried for a last second shot, on the miss C-I rebounded and scored on a buzzer beater to take a 45-27 halftime lead.

The Wildcats had a strong start to the 2nd half, getting off to a 9-0 run and their deficit was quickly back to single digits. They would hold that line for a good chunk of time but the Bluejackets offense got going again and they jumped back out to a 15 point lead. Chisago was quick to answer and were now within two possessions of the lead. This change is the score would happen a few times until late in the game. A six point difference in favor of C-I was in jeopardy as the Wildcats swung ole mo in their favor. They got to the free throw line with a chance to get even closer, but two misses allowed the Bluejackets a rebound. The Wildcats had to foul down late and C-I's Jameson Epple went 8-8 from the line to help them pull away. The Jackets won the game 84-70, but that certainly doesn't show how close the game truly was.

C-I improves to 10-11 on the season and will host Becker on Thursday. Emerson Droubie hit his 1,000th career point in the game! Congrats Emerson!

Chisago Lakes is now 2-18 on the season and will play in Zimmerman on Thursday.
